AVFD Mourns the Line of Duty Death of Deputy Chief David Theriault
Veteran Fire Officer and Lifelong Servant to the Town of Avon
January 16, 2026 | Avon, Conn. — The Avon Volunteer Fire Department announces with profound sadness the Line of Duty Death of Deputy Chief David Theriault, who passed away on January 15, 2026 following a courageous battle with occupational cancer. Deputy Chief Theriault was 48.
“Deputy Chief Dave Theriault dedicated his entire life to serving this Department and the Town of Avon,” said AVFD Chief Bruce Appell. “From the time he joined, Dave was a constant presence — reliable, selfless, and deeply committed to the people around him. He led by example, cared fiercely for his fellow firefighters, and gave more than most will ever know. Our department has lost a leader, a mentor, and a friend, and our hearts are with Dave’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”
Deputy Chief Theriault joined the Avon Volunteer Fire Department as an Explorer at the age of 14 and served the Department for nearly 35 years, rising through the ranks to the role of Deputy Chief. Throughout his career, he was a steady and respected presence within the Department, known for his dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to service.
During his fire service career, some of Deputy Chief Theriault’s notable accomplishments included:
- Serving as Explorer Advisor
- Promotion to Special Operations Captain
- Chair of the AVFD 75th Anniversary Committee
- Most Calls for Interior Firefighter Award (2022-2023)
- Most Training Hours for Support Firefighter (2024-2025)
Known for his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to others, Deputy Chief Theriault had a lasting impact on generations of firefighters and community members. His guidance, steadiness, and care for those around him helped shape the Avon Volunteer Fire Department and the town he served for his entire life.
