AVON VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT SWEARS IN NEW OFFICERS
Fire Chief Michael Trick Welcomes New Assistant Chief,
Captain, and Lieutenant to Ranks
February 10, 2016 | Avon, CT – Avon Volunteer Fire Department Chief Michael Trick proudly announces the appointment of a new officer and the promotions of two other officers. Firefighter Matt Caron has been appointed to the position of Lieutenant of Company 2, Lieutenant Aaron Gelber has been promoted to the position of Captain of Company 3, and Captain Joseph Speich has been promoted to the position of Assistant Chief responsible for training.
“I am extremely proud to welcome these men to their new leadership positions,” says Avon Volunteer Fire Department Chief Michael Trick. “They have each proven their dedication to the Department with continuous remarkable service over the past several years. We are very fortunate to have them on the team.”
Assistant Chief Joseph Speich (in photo – back row, far left) joined the AVFD in 1997 as an Explorer. He became a regular member in 2002 and served as a Lieutenant starting in 2006 before becoming a Captain in 2010 and was assigned to Special Operations from 2010-2011. Assistant Chief Speich earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Haven in 2005, and has completed training up to the level of Fire Officer 2 and Fire Instructor 2. He has also received Firefighter of the Year and Excellence in Leadership Awards from the AVFD.
Captain Aaron Gelber (in photo – back row, second from right) joined the AVFD in 2008 as an Explorer. He became a regular member in 2011 and has received training certifications up to the level of Fire Officer I and Fire Instructor I. He has also completed the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Basic Wild Land Fire Training. Captain Gelber was recognized for his contributions during Superstorm Sandy.

About the AVFD
Incorporated in 1943, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects more than 18,000 people living in the 22.6 square mile area that makes up the Town of Avon. The Department’s mission is to provide fire suppression and prevention, life safety and rescue support, as well as other community support to the citizens of the Town of Avon. In addition, the Department provides mutual aid support to those surrounding communities that, in time of need, may request such assistance.
Staffed entirely by volunteers, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department prides itself on the selflessness and dedication of its members – firefighters, fire police, administrative members, Explorers, active veterans, senior veterans, and associate members, all of whom play a vital role in the safety of Avon. The Department operates six companies and 15 pieces of apparatus, including a brush truck, ladder truck, tanker, rescue vehicle, boat, and pumpers. Four stations are located throughout Town – Company 1 on Darling Drive, Company 2 on Secret Lake Road, Company 3 on West Avon Road, and Company 4 on Huckleberry Hill Road.
