Prepare for Flooding
According to local meteorologists, the entire state of Connecticut can expect heavy rains on Friday, January 12, and Saturday, January 13, 2018. While the warmer temperatures are a nice break from the sub zero degree days we recently had, the combination of melting snow and heavy rain could cause major problems.
Because the ground is frozen, rain water and melted snow will not soak into the ground. Instead, it will run off to the lowest point … around basements.
To minimize the chance of potential issues, clear snow away from ground level basement window and away from downspouts by clearing a patch in the sow away from your home.
Check gutters for ice dams and remove built up snow (if you can do so safely).
If you have a sump pump, check to make sure it is operational. If it won’t pump water, get it checked, repaired, or replaced.
The weight of snow can cause structural damage; now is the time to remove what you can. Remember, wet snow is significantly heavier than dry powdery snow so please use caution when shoveling.
REMEMBER
FLASH FLOODING IS DANGEROUS.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS STANDING FLOOD WATER.
DON’T DROWN, GO AROUND.
ANY FLOOD WATER THIS TIME OF YEAR WILL BE DANGEROUSLY COLD.
Stay Safe and IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY OR REQUIRE EMS, FIRE, or POLICE, DIAL 911. SECONDS MAY COUNT.
