AVON VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT WELCOMES ENGINE 13
New Mini Pumper Replaces Old Brush Truck
Earlier this year, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) put into service Engine 13, a new mini pumper. Engine 13 replaces the Department’s old brush truck.
“As vital as it is for us to have large pieces of fire apparatus, our community also requires smaller vehicles to perform specific jobs that may be needed in various emergency scenarios,” says AVFD Chief Bruce Appell. “Engine 13 can be used when spaces just don’t allow for larger vehicles — for example, accessing a muddy area where water, foam, or tactical tools might be needed but a full-sized pumper is too big and heavy for the conditions.”
A 2019 Ford F550 Mini-Evo built by HME Fire Apparatus, Engine 13 is housed at Company 2 on Secret Lake Road and carries 300 gallons of water, 15 gallons of foam, and has 1500 GPM Hale pump. It will allow the AVFD to get into smaller neighborhoods as well as off-road locations. In addition, E13 will serve as a reconnaissance vehicle during inclement weather. The AVFD’s old brush truck has been repurposed into a utility vehicle.
Custom reflective tape applications were designed and donated by Orafol whose Reflective Solutions Division (formerly Reflexite Corporation) is headquartered in Avon, Connecticut.
About the AVFD
Incorporated in 1943, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects more than 18,000 people living in the 22.6 square mile area that makes up the Town of Avon. The Department’s mission is to provide fire suppression and prevention, life safety and rescue support, as well as other community support to the citizens of the Town of Avon. In addition, the Department provides mutual aid support to those surrounding communities that, in time of need, may request such assistance.
Staffed entirely by volunteers, the Avon Volunteer Fire Department prides itself on the selflessness and dedication of its members. The Department operates six companies and 15 pieces of apparatus, including a brush truck, ladder truck, tanker, rescue vehicle, boat, and pumpers. Four stations are located throughout Town – Company 1 on Darling Drive, Company 2 on Secret Lake Road, Company 3 on West Avon Road, and Company 4 on Huckleberry Hill Road.
